Language Arts Period _____ The Holocaust: Scale and Magnitude
Purpose: To better understand the scale of destruction during The Holocaust; you will be required to research the death toll of various groups under the Nazi regime. Compare the death toll to a recent census report for the state of Connecticut. Decide if the total death toll for the Holocaust is higher or lower than the current population for Connecticut.
Step One: Go to http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/09000.html to get the
most up-to-date information for Connecticut’s population.
Save this information into a MS Word document titled:
The Holocaust Resources.
Step Two: Go to www.wikipedia.org to locate the death tolls during The Holocaust. Examine the information. What group had the largest death toll? The lowest? Save all death toll info into the same Word document.
Step Three: Create MLA formatted citations for both online sources using http://citationmachine.net/ Save both citations into your Word document.
Step Four: Open a new MS Word document. Title it The Holocaust: Scale and Magnitude. Then write three paragraphs in which you explain the scale of deaths during The Holocaust compared to the current population of Connecticut. Include a list of the groups killed and the death toll numbers for each group. Paste your citations to the end of the document.
Step Five: Open a MS Excel document. Create columns with the following
headings:
· Current Connecticut Population
· Total number of deaths during The Holocaust
· Create a column, and label it, for each group of people that the Nazis persecuted and killed.
Step Six: Using the chart wizard in MS Excel, create a bar graph
that illustrates the data that you entered into the Excel sheet. The
Y axis should be millions; the X axis should represent each of
your columns’ data. Be sure to label each element of your graph.
Step Seven: Create a MS PowerPoint presentation that includes the information
documented in your three paragraph essay. Insert your Excel
graph. The last slide should be your MLA formatted citations.

The Holocaust:
Death Toll and Comparison to Connecticut Population
In order to better understand the scope and magnitude of The Holocaust during World War Two; I have chosen to compare the death toll during The Holocaust to the current population of Connecticut, U.S.A.; the state where I live. According to the United States Census Bureau; the 2005 estimate for the population of Connecticut is 3,510,297 people (2007).
The exact number of people killed by the Nazi regime may never be known, but scholars, using a variety of methods, including documentation from the Nazis of determining the death toll, have generally agreed upon common range of the number of victims. Recently declassified British and Soviet documents have indicated the total may be somewhat higher than previously believed. (Wikipedia, 2007). The following graphs and charts provide a range of the number of victims compared to the population of the State of Connecticut
